Langata Women's Prison/Preschool

Did you know that if a woman is imprisoned in Kenya and they have a child under 5, the child has to go live with the mother in prison if they don't have a supportive family member to take the child? The prison system does everything in their power and budget to help but we believe that we all can help!

Welcome to our initiative dedicated to providing preschool education for children who live with their incarcerated mothers in Kenya. We are committed to collaborating with the prison system to create a safe and nurturing environment where these children can learn and thrive. Our goal is to ensure that each child has access to quality education and the opportunity to grow in a supportive setting. Together, we can make a positive impact on their lives and future!

2025 First Contact

In January, our team from the USA had the privilege of traveling to Kenya alongside the wonderful Rob and Jackie Thomas from New Horizon Church in Dacono, CO where they allow us to host free weekly homeschool classes.
One of the highlights of our trip was connecting with Langata Women's Prison, where we met with the warden and began the process of launching computer classes for the women. While we couldn't take photos inside the compound due to security protocols, we were able to deliver fresh milk for the mothers and children and tour the preschool that serves both prison and guard children. The dedication of the teachers was evident, and they expressed a heartfelt need for resources to enhance the learning environment for these children.

Here are the things that they are desperately in need of:
1. Classroom materials like paper, pencils, crayons, scissors, craft paper, etc.
2. Toys - there were only a handful of toys for all the children. They need playground toys, and toys for the inside play area. Especially stuffed animals and what I call cuddly toys.
3. Classroom manipulatives - This one is already being set in motion. The team at iSTART in Kenya will be providing counters, blocks, and educational games to help enhance the students ability to learn and be fully prepared to Kindergarten outside the prison system. I will give an update with pictures in the coming months!
4. a second building - this is the big one. They have very little space and we want STEM Education Inc and the Kenya START team to help make it happen.
Now that we are back in the US we will be launching some campaigns to raise the funds to see this happen.
